Griffin Wins Stage 1 of Tour of Ulster

Tour of Ulster 2008 - Four Masters Cycling ClubThe Tour of Ulster started this year in wet conditions in Omagh, but brightened up quickly, and after only 11 miles of racing a 24 man group had gone clear, which reached a maximum lead of 24 seconds before being caught. This group included former and last year’s winner Ryan Connor (Pezula Racing) and former double winner David Mc Cann (Giant Asia).

By the time the race reached Enniskillen with 32 miles covered, 26 riders had gone clear and held a 30 second lead over the main bunch, this was to be the race winning move. But with a strong wind blowing the race split up, and by the time the race approached Ballygawley at 62 miles there were 7 groups on the road covering 5 minutes.

With 2 climbs on the run into the finish the front group split leaving 12 riders in the front group.

The 12 man riders finished some 2 minutes in front of a 3 man group with Paul Griffin (Giant Asia) winning the stage from Neil Delahaye (Usher Irish Road Club A) and Griffin taking the first yellow jersey of the race. This group was followed by a 13 man group at 4mins 15 secs, this group included last year's winner Ryan Connor (Pezula Racing) and Sean Downey (Team Ireland – Juniors).

The leader of the King of the Hills competition after day 1 is Paul Griffin (Giant Asia).

Stage 2

McCann Leads Tour of Ulster

Belfast’s David McCann moved closer to winning his second Tour of Ulster when he finished runner-up to last year’s victor Ryan Connor (Pezula Racing) in today’s tough 67 mile stage through the Sperrin Mountains. McCann took the Yellow Jersey from Gian Asia team-mate Paul Griffin from Tralee who won the opening stage at Omagh on Saturday.
The action started early with a group of 10 riders going clear after 3 miles, and after the first KOH at Mountfield, Mc Cann) joined the leaders, which included Connor. This group was followed by a chasing group of 4 riders at 20 seconds which included yellow jersey Paul Griffin (Giant Asia) with the main field a further 45 seconds in arrears.
Just after Cookstown with 27 miles covered the 2 front groups merged to leave a 15 rider lead group with peleton at 2 minutes 20 seconds. This was to prove to be the race winning move.

The front group stayed today until the final climb of the day of Gortin Glen when the lead group finally split up, with Mc Cann and Connor going over the climb first, followed by a group of 4 chasers at 45 seconds, including Paul Griffin.
At the finish Connor outsprinted Mc Cann for the stage win while the Belfastman moved into the overall lead. He now leads the race by a mere 24 seconds having been penalised 40 seconds by the race commissaire for a sheltering offence but this should be enough to see him through today’s final stage in County Fermanagh.
The Irish News Award in memory of Jim Traynor is currently being led by young Dubliner Mark Nestor (Eurocycles). This competition is for the best placed Under 23 rider and Nestor has a strong 2 minute cushion over Colm Cassidy from the Usher Irish road Club.
Cycling Ireland Board member and treasurer Rory Wyley from Waterford is winning the Veterans classification while Eurocycles lead Usher I.R.C. by two minutes in the Team competition.
